Scientists to share experiences and training on the role of mitochondria in nervous system

The five-day school plans to provide theoretical and practical training on a wide range of topics related to the role of mitochondria in the human nervous system

The Panjab University will host the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO)-supported school on the theme of Mitochondria and Neurodegeneration from October 26 to 30.

The announcement for the same was made by PU vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover on Friday in the presence of Rajat Sandhir, the head of department of neurology at PGI, Vivek Lal and Dr Manish Modi from the department of neurology, PGI.

The five-day school plans to provide theoretical and practical training on a wide range of topics related to the role of mitochondria in the human nervous system to young researchers from Asia-Pacific region and representing Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Bhutan, Pakistan and India.

During the conference, faculty for the school will include scientists in the field from various parts of the world. Director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center, US, Russell H Swerdlow will share his expertise related to the role of mitochondria in Alzheimer’s disease.

Executive director at Garrison Institute on Aging, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, P Hemachandra Reddy will provide insights into the role of mitochondria in age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr Lisa Chakravarti from the University of Nottigham, UK, will deliberate on the role of mitochondria in Parkinson’s disease.

Dr Masami Kojima, Dr Sunil Kaul and Dr Renu Wadhwa from National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan, will share their findings on various aspects related to mitochondria research, including the beneficial role of Ashwagandha, Indian Ginseng.


Inderjit Singh from Medical University of South Carolina, US, will share his work related to peroxisome and mitochondria in neurodegeneration.
Dr Nand K Relan from Stony Brook School of Medicine is expected to discuss the role of nuclear medicine tools in studying mitochondrial diseases.
Professor Vivek Lal said, “The brain is a very complex organ. It is so intriguing that we humans have been able to understand only about five per cent of its functioning. Brain research is something that has no physical barriers across countries worldwide.”

Faculty from India will include K P Mohanakumar from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB), Kolkata, who will share his work related to cybrids (cell fusion).

From the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB), Hyderabad, K Thangaraj will share his work related to mitochondrial DNA and evolution. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, professor S Ganesh would talk about the role of mitochondria in Lafora disease, a type of epilepsy.


During the event, Dr M Rajeshwari from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, will talk about the role of mitochondrial DNA in diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders.

Other participants will include professors and scientists from Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai; Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (DRDO-INMAS), Delhi; Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), Delhi; Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR), Lucknow; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali; National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali and Central University of Punjab. Various aspects related to mitochondria will be discussed in depth during the five-day event.
Organiser of the conference Rajat Sandhir has been investigating the role of mitochondria in the nervous system for more than a decade. The event will be formally inaugurated on Monday by the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Raj Bahadur at ICSSR Complex at Panjab University.

Sandhir said, “The event is expected to help in sharing expertise and knowledge and would provide platform for inter-institutional collaboration to improve the understanding about the role of mitochondria in neurological conditions. It ultimately may be a step closer in identifying therapies to prevent or reduce the burden of neurological conditions.”
