Punjab: Eying polls, ABVP members take students to watch Rustom and Mohenjo Daro

Although the parties traditionally resort to these methods by tempting the students to increase their vote bank, this year the student outfits of big parties like Shriomani Akali Dal, the BJP and the Congress have a lot at stake with Punjab going for elections next year.

In the run-up to the Panjab University students’ elections, the political parties have started wooing the voters by luring them.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday arranged two buses in which around 150 students from various departments of the university were taken to a multiplex to watch the first day first show of Rustom and Mohenjo Daro.

Both the movies are from top Bollywood stars with a huge fan following among the students.

“Yes we went for a movie today which was sponsored by the ABVP. The parties are approaching us daily during canvassing asking us to put forward our demands in return of voting. Right from latest gadgets, trips and movies. Everything is being given according to the number of votes backing a student,” said a student of UIET.

However, organisational secretary of ABVP Saurabh Kapoor said: “With our growing hold in the university, opposite parties are spreading these false rumors about us. All these charges are baseless and are being said to tarnish our image.”

Although the parties traditionally resort to these methods by tempting the students to increase their vote bank, this year the student outfits of big parties like Shriomani Akali Dal, the BJP and the Congress have a lot at stake with Punjab going for elections next year.

Sources said with the tough competition this year for the student council elections, the expenditure is likely to sky rocket and parties will go all out in pacifying the students to vote for their respective parties.

ID cards must

The Panjab University has asked all persons visiting the campus to must carry a proof of their identity. PU Spokesperson said that Dean University Instructions (DUI) has issued instructions in that regard, which would also be applicable on employees, students and research scholars. The proof of identity can be asked for by a Faculty Member, ‘A’ Class Officer or Security Person. In case the person is unable to prove his/her identity, a photograph can also be clicked by the official, if necessary, he added.
