Punjab: Clash averted in Phagwara

A possible clash between two communities was averted on Sunday thanks to the intervention of the administration.

According to police, Gurdip Singh, an activist with the Akal Students Federation had put up a poster of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale outside his residence in Adarsh Nagar on Saturday.

His neighbour, Deepak Bhardwaj, chief of the state unit of Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Surakhsha Samiti onjected to this and then put up a poster of General AS Vaidya, who had played key role in Operation Blue Star in which Bhindrawale was killed.


Soon, anticipating trouble, supporters of both groups came to the scene.

The police was called in and personnel were deployed in front of the houses to prevent the argument from turning ugly.

After talks which went on till midnight, both sides gave in. Bhardawaj removed Vaidya’s poster, while Gurdip removed Bhindrawale’s poster.
