Police to tighten noose around drunken drivers

The Chandigarh Traffic Police are all set to tighten the noose around drunken drivers on city roads.

The Chandigarh Traffic Police are all set to tighten the noose around drunken drivers on city roads. The final modalities are being worked out to procure 25 alcosensors to eradicate the menace of drunken driving in the city.

At present, the Chandigarh Police have only 11 alcosensors, which are used to check drunken driving in the city. These include six Traffic Interceptors (police vehicles which spot a violator, chase him and issue the violation slip),which carry the alcosensors while on the move on city roads. “Once the additional alcosensors are procured,we shall be intensifying our drive against drunken drivers in the city. It is definitely a menace and drunk drivers not only risk their own lives but are also a threat to other rule-abiding motorists on the city roads. We are going to hold our anti-drunken driving drives on a more regular basis in the coming days,” said a senior traffic police officer.

The proposal to this effect has already been sent to the UT Department of Home and is likely to get the nod in the coming days.

“There are occasions like new year celebrations and other festivals like Diwali and Holi when we fall short of alcosensors. If we have an adequate number of alcosensors,we would be able to enforce the rules strictly and challan more and more violators, which would definitely act as a deterrent,” a senior UT police officer said.
