Paddy arrival begins in Punjab grain markets

The new paddy crop has started arriving in the grain markets of Jalandhar district and private shellers have already started the procurement process. Farmers have till now got a good price for their crop despite moisture content in it.

The new paddy crop has started arriving in the grain markets of Jalandhar district and private shellers have already started the procurement process. Farmers have till now got a good price for their crop despite moisture content in it. Procurement by government agencies will start from October 1.

According to information procured from the district administration,over 15,000 quintals of paddy have arrived in the mandi in the last few days. Out this,at least 5,800 quintals have already been procured by private players.

Besides Jalandhar city,the new crop has arrived in the grain markets of Bhogpur and Shahkot,too. District Mandi Officer Sarabjit Singh Atwal said moisture content in the crop was quite high at the moment,but farmers were still getting a good price from the private shellers.

Though the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy is Rs 1,030 per quintal,farmers are getting between Rs 985 and Rs 1,020 per quintal.

Sources said the moisture content in the crop was 24 per cent against the permitted level of 17 per cent.

A farmers from Partapura area said he had sown the early ripening variety of the paddy and his entire crop was ready. “I am getting Rs 1,020 per quintal,which is a good rate keeping in mind the level of moisture in the crop,” he said.
