THE ENFORCEMENT Directorate probe faced by the SAD MLA from Phillaur and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Avinash Chander has apparently cost him dear. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and SAD president Sukhbir Badal Friday appointed Balde Khera, a new entrant in the party from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), as the in-charge of the Phillaur constituency. It is usually the sitting MLA or the future candidate from the constituency who is made the incharge.

In an indication of the impending move, party spokesperson Dr Daljit Singh Cheema had recently said that Chander’s services will be used elsewhere and that the party will announce about it later.

ED has summoned Chander several times in connection with its investigation in the multicrore synthetic drugs case. The MLA is under the scanner for his alleged links with Goraya-based businessman Chuni Lal Gaba who is in jail along with his son in the case. Chander’s brother Steven Kler and his wife have also been summoned by the ED.

Khera’s elevation in the party was also expected. Sukhbir had termed his induction in the party akin to sounding of the death knell for the BSP in the Doaba region.

Significantly, CPS Chander got another jolt when the Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday cancelled the appointment of 18 CPSs of Punjab.
