So now you can say “thank you” to your peon who has been doing excellent work and goes beyond his call of duty by recommending his name for the honours.

The Planning Department has approved a scheme of Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration,Punjab,(MGSIPAP) for giving excellence awards to promote good governance. Staff’s experiences and performances will be documented by the institute as case studies and classified into categories.

Finance Minister Upinderjit Kaur has allocated Rs 30 lakh for the project in this Budget,and stated that Punjab would be the first state to introduce excellence awards from next year to recognise and motivate exemplary initiatives,innovations and performances by public servants,government bodies and others in various spheres of public policy and administration.

MGSIPAP Director General BK Srivastava says,“While proposing the scheme,which will be designed and managed by the institute,our main intention was to identify and project role models for inspiration and guidance because example is better than precept. Every department has at least five to ten per cent employees who are untouched by corruption,are dedicated and go out of their way to help their departments or public.”

Apart from being honoured,these employees will also get a chance to share their work models and experiences with their peers at seminars organised by the institute. “As a training institution,we would know very little about the practical ways of doing things better unless we identify and associate with thinkers,performers,innovators and trendsetters and use their wisdom and experience,” he says. About the procedure for selection,Srivastava says proformas listing various parameters would be sent to offices,besides employees could recommend each other and also self-nominate.
