According to the police, the incident happened around 5.10 pm. Kadian had checked into the hotel around 4.45 pm in his car and went directly to take the lift to the top floor. His colleagues at the department told Newsline that he would go swimming in the hotel every day after work.

“He was the topper of his batch in 1987 and was among the most brilliant officers of the department,” recalled one of the colleagues. Ajay had also applied for three months’ leave a few days ago.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Anil Dhawan said, “He checked into the hotel 15-20 minutes before the incident took place. He was alone.”

Asked if it was a suicide, Dhawan said that it was a matter of investigation. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. But it is a matter of investigation. We have not recovered any suicide note from the spot.”

However, the family members said that it could be an accident, and he might have slipped from the sixth floor. The police have ruled out foul play in the initial investigation.

The body has been kept in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Sector 6, and a post-mortem will be conducted on Thursday.
