People visiting the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research are soon expected to get valet parking option at the hospital. The hospital administration has recently formed a committee to look into the proposal. Former PGI director Dr Yogesh Chawla had formed a committee to examine the proposal. The four-member committee is headed by Dr Arunaloke Chakrabarti, head of the medical microbiology. “The security department of the hospital gave a proposal about valet parking. Initially it can be started at the Nehru Hospital, as it suffers a major parking problem,” said a PGI official.

Officials said the number of vehicles that comes to the Nehru Hospital on a daily basis is around 2000-3000. Around 30 per cent of these people park their vehicles in the PGI, which is around 400 meters away from the Nehru Hospital.

Gurmeet Singh, a Patiala resident, said: “I dropped my family at the Nehru Hospital and it took me around 15 minutes to come back from the parking area (research block) to the Nehru Hospital. If started, this facility can really help people.” The committee has started working out the modalities. Two meetings have already taken place in this regard. An official said the file has now been sent to the institute’s engineering department to further look into the matter.

The security department of the hospital said they have received a few queries in this regard from the administration recently. PGI’s chief security officer P C Sharma told the Chandigarh Newsline: “We have recommended two locations where the vehicles can be parked. Valet parking rates are also an issue that need to be taken care of.”

One of the committee members said at a given point of time, more than 100 vehicles can be parked in one of the locations that has been suggested for valet parking and at the second location more number of vehicles can be parked, as the area is very large. One of the locations is near the Gole Market and other is near the swimming pool. Officials said no such facility is currently available at any of the hospital in the city or in neighboring states.
