Good news for residents who have opted for net metering for solar rooftop power plants (SPV) as they will get paid for injecting the excess solar power into the grid.
As per the Solar Power-Grid Connected Ground Mounted and Solar Rooftop and Metering Regulations, 2015, the excess solar power injected into the grid is carried forward to next billing cycles and adjusted against the electricity units consumed by prosumer (consumer who produces as well). The excess electricity measured in kilo watt hour is only to be utilised to offset the consumption measured in kilo watt hour and not to compensate any other fee and charges imposed by the distribution licensee.
Santosh Kumar, CEO of Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST), said that at present the cumulative excess solar power was injected into grid lapse at the end of settlement period. “Now prosumer will get paid for excess power injected into the grid at the end of each settlement period at the rate prescribed by JERC,” said Kumar.
The decision was taken by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) while hearing a petition filed by CREST in Delhi on May 13.
On the request of CREST, the commission has also agreed to amend the regulations to enhance the grid connectivity to rooftop solar systems to 50 per cent of the transformer capacity which is 30 per cent at present. The commission has also allowed net metering of the solar power plants without converting its output for the projects already commissioned before the regulations came into existence.
Kumar said that the decisions of the commission would make installing SPV more lucrative and attract people to go for solar power.
CREST has empanelled 27 agencies for installing rooftop grid SPV power plants. For setting up of a plant of 1kWp to up to 5kWp, Rs 85,000 would be required. Similarly, one has to shell out Rs 80,000 to install a solar plant of more than 5kWp to up to 10KWp. To install a solar plant of more than 10kWp to up to 20kWp, one requires Rs 75,000.
What is net metering?
It is an arrangement whereby a solar power system is connected to electrical service connection of a prosumer and solar energy exported to the grid is deducted (adjusted) in terms of units from energy imported from the distribution licensee during the applicable billing period.
What is gross metering?
It means total solar power generated is exported to grid.
