The city may have added more flights to Dubai, however, passengers who landed in the airport are not too happy with the facilites available there.

On Monday, IndiGo started its direct flight to Dubai, two weeks after Air India started operating its flights to Sharjah. The IndiGo Dubai-Chandigarh-Dubai flight will operate daily.

The first IndiGo flight with 90 passengers from Dubai touched down at 10.40 am, 20 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, and left at 4.10 pm with 127 passengers on board.

A senior IndiGo official told Chandigarh Newsline that the overall response was good. “All the operating captains of the flight were from Chandigarh,” said an official.

But those who arrived said that the facilities at the airport needs to be upgraded.

“The flight landed much before the scheduled time. But, it took us one hour to come out of the airport as the transfer of baggage was very slow. I am happy that we have a direct flight. But, the facilities disappointed me,” said Darshan Singh, a resident of Chandigarh.

Another area which passengers complained about was poor transport facilities. On Monday, most arrivals had family members waiting along with private vehicles to take them home. Those who had to travel to areas like Nawashahar, Hoshairpur and Patiala had to take a bus for their destination. No direct bus service to any destination expect Chandigarh is available currently at the airport.

“A direct bus service to various places in Punjab is must. It should be started from here,” said Varinder Singh, who works as a painter in Dubai.

However, unlike this couple from Panchkula, very few showed hopes that the “teething problems” faced by passengers at the airport would get solved in the future. “For us, the best thing is that a direct flight to our hometown has been started. It has saved a lot of time,” said Priti and Naveen Sachar, both based in Dubai.

In the afternoon, when the passengers started arriving at the departure gate, most of them were happy just to be able to take a direct flight out of the country. However, many said that the luggage trolleys were either broken or jammed.

“This is an international airport, and the luggage trolleys are not working properly,” said Harkrishan Singh, a Kharar resident, who along with his wife, were visiting Dubai to meet their son. “We are senior citizens and the trolleys are giving us a tough time. This doesn’t look like an International airport.”
