Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Friday staked claim to party ticket from Patiala (City) Assembly segment.
His aide M P Singh submitted an application on his behalf to the PPCC office here today. If elected, he would have to give up his seat in Lok Sabha seat won from Amritsar in 2014.

The segment, on which Amarinder has staked his claim, is represented by his wife and former union minister Preneet Kaur. She has not applied for the ticket. She had won an Assembly byelection in 2014 from Patiala, a pocket borough of the royal family, after it was vacated by Amarinder.

The Congress is in the process of accepting applications from the contenders and the last day of submission is August 15. Amarinder had recently announced that the party is likely to announce its candidates by September-end.

Amarinder is likely to be nominated from Patiala. If he wins from his home town, he would have to resign from the Parliament as well as party’s post of Deputy leader.

The Punjab Congress chief had contested 2012 Assembly election from Patiala and won by a margin of 42,000 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, however, when Preneet contested, the margin shrunk to 7,000 votes when AAP leader Dr Dharamvira Gandhi defeated her. Later, however, she won by 23,000 votes in the assembly by-election.

Amarinder has contested from Patiala three times in a row from 2002 onwards. He has been a legislator from Talwandi Sabo and Samana in the past.
