In an effort that could bring relief to consumers and regulate the high prices of onion in the open market,Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation has decided to sell onions at a fixed price of Rs 40 per kilo through the fair price shop network. The Corporation is a state government undertaking.
Onion prices in the open market are varying between Rs 55 to Rs 60 per kg. Two kilos of onions would be made available per family in one month.
Sale of onions would start soon through fair price shops from headquarter towns Shimla,Solan,Hamirpur,Mandi and Kangra districts in the first phase,said Managing Director of the Corporation Diljeet Singh Dogra.
He said the facility would be available from Wednesday in retail outlets of the Corporation at Kasumpti,Chhota Shimla,Brockhurst and Sanjauli,in Shimla town.
Dogra said,This initiative is a totally independent decision of the corporation to intervene in the situation and bring down onion prices by selling them at lower prices.
