Big O: Doctor lists ways to win over obesity

In a career spanning a few decades in the city,Dr Sarvinder Gandhok,a consultant physician,child specialist and a former TV health show host,has seen many patients,including children. The ailments have been varying but what’s truly got him worried him is the increase in the number of children with obesity.

“There were just a handful of cases back in the late 90s. Today,obesity is among the most widespread medical problems affecting children. In India,nearly 15 per cent of children,aged between six and 11,are obese,” said Dr Gandhok.

With an aim to “educate the city” about the classification,causes,effects and prevention of obesity,with special stress on obesity in children,Dr Gandhok has authored a book,Winning Over Obesity,that was formally released on Tuesday afternoon in the city. The book presents,in a light,illustrated way,various facets of the disease in a language that’s not confusing with medical jargon. It also busts common myths about dieting and fat loss. It’s his second book after penning Winning over Diabetes last year.

While the doctor agrees that people are well aware of the benefits of eating healthy and exercising in order to lead a healthy and disease-free lifestyle,they are looking for ‘quick fix remedies’ and turning towards weight loss programmes that,he feels,have become a “fashionable trend”. “People undergoing these diet plans are mostly medically compromised and are popping readily available off-the-counter pills without medical supervision,” he said.

The book highlights such issues and offers simple tips to create,what he calls,a “sensible diet management system” that encourages the reader to establish a better understanding of his or her own personal relationship with food,create new eating habits and accomplish clearly structured goals. Dieting,he asserts,is a strict no-no. “Losing weight sensibly and then maintaining it is the key to healthy living. Also,it has to involve all members of the family,” summed up Dr Gandhok who is now working on a book on dealing with hypertension.
