Considering the rapidly growing demand and increasing shortage of water supply in the state which is industrialising at a furious pace, the state government is firming up an ambitious Industrial Water Policy to meet its demands over the next 50 years.

“Considering the present water supply commitment and future needs in the 11-plus Special Investment Region(SIRs),Special Economic Zone(SEZs) and several industrial parks, besides other industrial clusters,we need to have a sound industrial water supply policy. Water resources are very limited and are not going to increase in future. Fixing industrial water charges will also be a key aspect in deciding the new policy,” a top state government official said.

Sources said the state government has already formed a high-level committee under the chairpersonship of additional chief secretary (finance) in which principal secretary (industry & mines, water resources) and managing director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) are members, among others.

The committee held its first meeting recently. “A high-level meeting was also held last week in which the decision of appointing a consultant was taken and terms of references (TORs) fixed,” a source said.

According the TORs,”The consultant shall assess the existing industrial water demand across the state. Based on findings, the consultant shall forecast the likely region-wise pattern of industrial growth. They would use this to project the likely increase in water demand over the next 50 years. The consultant shall have to assess varied modes of existing water supplies that cater to industrial demands and fixation of their supply sources. They have also to guide the government about the demand-supply match and suggest new potential sources of industrial water supply.”

“The consultant has to examine the existing tariff across the water-chain as also region-wise service variations to suggest realistic tariff projections and recommend execution mechanism,” sources said.

Desalination plants for industries

The state government is also preparing an action plan for setting up water desalination plants across the state for industrial water supply. A number of state and national companies have shown interest in setting up such units. Plan is likely to be ready in next two-three months, sources said.
