SUV ‘driven’ by businessman’s son runs over nine, three dead

In a hit-and-run incident, three persons were killed and six injured — two critically — when they were hit by an SUV allegedly being driven by the son of a Dubai-based industrialist in Gandhidham in Kutch district, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place at around 11 pm Monday near IFFCO gate. The accused, identified as Pankil Mohatta, son of prominent businessman Sunil Mohatta, is absconding even as police seized his passport.

According to police, the SUV (registration number GJ 12CP 8309), which was coming from Adipur, first hit a scooter parked on the roadside and then ran over nine pedestrians, who were casual labourers and residents of Sundarpur area in Gandhidham.

After the accident, the driver sped away in the SUV, which is registered in the name of Pankil, said police.

They said that the driver might be drunk when the accident took place.

While Laxman Parmar, Meghiben Vankar and Guman Bhil were declared dead when brought to Rambaug Hospital, the injured, including two girls, where admitted there for treatment.

Meanwhile, family members of the victims have refused to claim the bodies, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

“The car was registered in the name of Pankil. It was found from near his residence, but he was missing. So, we suspect that he was driving the car when the accident took place,” said Gandhidham B Division police inspector Samat Varotariya.

“Police have seized the passport of Pankil from his residence and also issued an alert to prevent him from escaping the country as his father lives in Dubai. Pankil lives in Gandhidham with his grandparents,” said Kutch (East) S P G V Barot said. Police said they were now trying to trace him through the location of his mobile phone.

Pankil has been booked under IPC Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) and for rash driving.
