NCP wants to contest 26 seats

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party plans to field at least 26 candidates in the Assembly polls scheduled in December this year and is in talks with its ally Congress for the same.

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) plans to field at least 26 candidates in the Assembly polls scheduled in December this year and is in talks with its ally Congress for the same.

The party, which is set to hold its national convention for the first time in Gujarat during mid-September,had fielded eight candidates in the 2007 Assembly polls,of which three won.

NCP sources said if the Congress did not agree to its demand of fielding at least one candidate in each of the 26 districts in the state, the party may contest all 182 seats on its own.

Meanwhile, the party is gearing up to hold its two-day national convention in Vadodara on September 15 and 16. “It will boost the party morale,” said state NCP president Jayant Patel, who is one of the three party’s MLAs in the state.

The convention is likely to be attended by top leadership of the party, including Union ministers Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel.

Vadodara as the venue for NCP’s national convention is significant since the party’s entire district leadership had defected to the BJP last year.
