A hutment in Kalupur, a crowded area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat caught fire killing one woman and three children at midnight. Five others received burns and were shifted to Ahmedabad civil hospital.
The fire officials said that one hutment caught fire and within no time four other hutment under the Kalupur bridge also caught fire.
As per primary information, victims are from Kasturbhai Chunara’s family. His sister Geeta and her two sons identified as Dinesh and Manoj and a neighbour identified as Dhaval were charred to death, emergency officials from 108 services said.
Kasturbhai is admitted in civil hospital along with four others who received burns but are now non critical. The injured persons are Hansa Vaghri, Raju Vaghri, Bharti Vaghri and Kanta Chamanbhai.
The Dariapur police that have registered a case of fire and accidental death stated four victims were charred to death on the spot.
Jt. Commissioner of Police, SG Bhati said, “When we reached there, four were found dead on spot. We have asked forensic laboratory to ascertain the cause of fire as it is uncertain what sparked the incident. We suspect a cylinder blast or a shot circuit but residents are not confirming either”.
He added, “This spot is densely populated and hutments had stored piles of cotton. The fire spread fast due to cotton and hutments were charred. The fire was however brought under control”.
The residents in the area stated that they were fast asleep and didn’t know when fire spread. They added that they heard a blast and rushed to save themselves when the hutments caught fire.
The post mortem of the deceased wil be conducted at the civil hospital. The police are now waiting for FSL report for further investigation.
