Now, BMW cars will run on engines made in India

BMW cars and SUVs in India will now have locally assembled engines post the inauguration of Force Motors’ plant in Chennai. Speaking at the inauguration of the plant in Chennai on Tuesday Prasan Firodia managing director of Force Motors’ said the Chennai plant would be the first independent plant outside of the BMW group that will assemble and test engines for the German Luxury Car maker.

Spread across 100,000 square feet of land the plant can produce 20,000 premium engines per year. Engines for BMW’ 1,3,5,7 series and the X range vehicles will be manufactured in the plant. The IT system if the production facility allows for Real Time integration with the global production network of BMW. The plant has seen investment to the tune of Rs 200 crores and Firodia said revenues generated from the plant would be in excess of Rs 1,000 crore in the next two years.

BMW India has about 50 per cent localisation in its locally manufactured cars.
