Mahindra has announced that it will launch the TUV 300 compact-SUV on the 10th of September 2015. Mahindra calls it the ‘Tough Utility Vehicle’, with tough-boxy exterior design and relatively upmarket interiors with space to seat 7 people if necessary. It is expected to be priced between Rs. 6.5 Lakh to Rs. 8.5 Lakh, ex-showroom and will cash in on the huge demand for compact-SUVs in the country at present.
The TUV 300 has been under development for over a year, and various mules of the UV have been spotted testing around the country from time-to-time. It is built on a whole new platform and was developed by the company wholly in-house. Mahindra has designed the TUV 500 keeping in mind that it will be sold as a global model; exterior-interior design, built-quality, space, safety-systems, equipment and drivetrain have been designed to adhere to a higher standard than other Mahindra products.
In terms of design, we have a very good idea of how the exterior will look, but only a rough idea about the interior. Spy shots and teasers by the company itself have revealed the look of the TUV 300 from the outside; it gets a very boxy design which the company claims is macho because it looks like a battle-tank, the design team at Mahindra even had help from Pininfarina, a famous Italian design-house, in fine-tuning its looks. Exterior highlights include short front- and rear-overhangs, tall bonnet, squared-off wheel-arches, blackened B-pillar, spare wheel mounted on the tail-gate etc. The exterior design tries to give the TUV 300 the butch looks of old-school off-roaders while complementing it with modern touches. Mahindra will offer a lot of accessories, it is expected to make the compact-SUV very popular across markets.
The interior design is still a bit of a mystery. What we know is that it will get a 4-spoke steering wheel, a sporty instrument cluster, maybe a touch-screen baed multimedia system etc. While the space is optimum for 5 passengers, some variants may be offered with 3rd-row jump seats too.

The TUV 300 will be powered by a three-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor, named the mHawk80, which will be mated to a 5-speed transmission with 2WD. The TUV 300 has been designed to work with a 4WD system too, but that will not be offered in India initially.
