A sharp-shooter, Mahesha of the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment served for 11 years in the Indian army. Last rites of another braveheart from the same battalion, Havildar Elumalai M, a Non commissioned Officer (NCO) of the same battalion are to be held today at Vellore in Tamil Nadu. According to its mahout’s command, Lakshmi plays a mouth organ and grooves to its tune. The elephant has become an entertainer for the people visiting the camp.

11 fishermen detained by Sri Lankan Navy

Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu), Feb 11 (ANI): The Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday apprehended 11 Indian fishermen and their country boats on charges of trespassing into the territorial waters of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Navy said the fishermen were held in the Gulf of Mannar. The Sri Lankan Navy also seized two trawlers.

Four detained in connection to girls suicide in TN

Villupuram, Jan 25 (ANI): Four persons have been detained in connection with the suicide case of three girls in Tamil Nadu. The three girls in a two-page suicide note said the students had filed several complaints against college chairman Vasuki Subramanian but to no avail. Citing "torture" by the management, the girls hoped that their suicide would finally force the authorities to take action against the chairman. The girls accused the administration of charging 'excess fees' and never giving the bill. They also mentioned that the college lacked proper infrastructure and there was 'nothing to learn'.

People worshipped local Gods and offered sugarcane and observed fast among other forms of celebrations like cooking mush, porridge, curd rice, poli, payasam etc. Educational institutions in the state held special programmes on the occasion. Dressed in traditional wear, college students in Madurai city prepared beautiful patterns with powdered colours, apart from cooking porridge and other delicacies on the festival. Meanwhile, sugarcane markets remained abuzz in capital Chennai city as people thronged the markets to buy the festival essential.
